Yokosawa Experiments on Turbulent Flow in a Square Duct with a Rough Wall Memoirs of the Faculty of Engineering, Nagoya University, Vol. 41, No. 2, 280-294 (1990) ABSTRACT OF EXPERIMENT A fully developed turbulent flow in a square duct with four smooth walls is measured with hot-wire anemometers. This data file presents the distributions of mean velocities, fluctuating velocities, and turbulent shear stresses. The contours of the primary flow veocity are distorted toward the corners of the duct owing to the corner oriented secondary currents. Two secondary flow cells are yielded in any given cross-section of the duct. The contours of the fluctuating velocities are similar to those of the primary flow velocity, except that the concavity of the contours toward the dcut corners is quite pronounced. In the contour maps of the turbulent shear stresses, there exist closed contours enclosed by a contour of zero-shear stress. INSTRUMENTS The test duct was straight, with a square cross-section of 50 x 50 mm, measures 4500 mm in length. Air was supplied by a centrifugal fan to the test duct through an exactly calibrated quadrant flow nozzle and a settling chamber. Normal and X-wire hot-wire anemometres were used in measuring the velocity compo- nents and the turbulent shear stresses. A novel technique of X-wire anemometry were used to measure the transverse velocity components accurately. The measurements were performed at a cross-section of 89.6D downstream from a duct inlet, keeping Reynolds number at 65000. The origin of the orthogonal coordinate system is at the center of the duct cross-section. The X1-axis refers the longitudinal axis along the duct center line, the X2- and the X3-axes are the transverse coordinates: the X2-axis is in the horizontal direction, and the X3-axis is in the vertical direc- tion. All measured variables given in this data file are those obtained in the third quadrant of the duct cross-section, in which X2<0 and X3<0. Transverse coordinates are normalized by the half length of the duct side denoted by B (=25 mm).
